Steph Gilmore: “Don’t Take It Too Seriously”
What advice can a world famous surfer offer to us learner surfers?
Stephanie Gilmore, one of the biggest names in modern surfing, 5 times world champion (having won her first event at just 17) and current leading surfer on the World Tour, came to London yesterday.
At the screening of her new film Stephanie In The Water at the London Surf Film Festival Presented by Reef, I was lucky enough to get to get a quick question in to her.
Sam: If you could give a piece of advice to your teenage self, just starting out in professional surfing, what would it be?
Stephanie Gilmore: Just to take it all in. I kinda floated through it but the best advice would be to have fun. Don’t take it too seriously.
So there you have it. Short and snappy. Even from the best in the world – one of the most focussed pro athletes and ruthless competitors in the sport, in any sport for that matter: if you’re getting your head into surfing… Have fun. Don’t take it too seriously.
